If you’re like most avid readers, you are always looking for new/ fresh reading material. Have you ever checked out some of the book award websites? If you haven’t, you should. After all, if a book was good enough to win a prestigious award, it will probably make a great read. This is not always the truth, but its worth checking the list … because the majority of the books on the lists are great!
Man Booker International Book Prize
The Man Booker Prize promotes the finest in fiction by rewarding the very best book of the year.
Caldecott Medal Winners and Honor Books
The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
The National Book Awards are given to recognize achievements in four genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People’s Literature.
The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Since 1901, it has recognized achievement in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, peace and economics.
The award recognizes an outstanding fiction book selected by judges who are themselves fiction writers.
The Pulitzer Prizes recognize the best in journalism, letters, drama and music.
The outstanding literary talent exists in many parts of the Commonwealth is making a significant contribution to contemporary writing in English. To encourage and reward the upsurge of new Commonwealth fiction and ensure that works of merit reach a wider audience outside their country of origin, the Commonwealth Foundation established the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1987.
